About

… the person

I was conceived in mid-1977, probably at the same time the first draft of Monty Python’s Life of Brian was completed. Hey, everybody has an ego and mine is immense. Politicaly-wise I used to consider myself a socialist until someone told me about Guy Debord and the Situationist International. My Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is INFP.

I lived in Madrid for almost my entire life, except for a few months in Salamanca and six months in Cambridge, UK. I moved to Barcelona on November 2004 to start a “new life” in it. Since July 2007 I live in a little countryside town of Central Catalonia called Sallent

I think of Mac OS X as the ultimate desktop operating system. I use other systems like Linux or BSD in servers. Technically I prefer Solaris but since Sun was phagocyted by Oracle all their technologies have become the second coming of the antichrist. I keep an eye open on Illumos development.

I love comics and consider them in the same league as books or movies. I couldn’t live without trying new things

Since November 2007 I try (and people say that achieving) being a good parent. I don’t have lot of time for anything else and I’m quite happy about it.

… the professional

First years (1997-2001)

I started my professional career on 1996, being my first work as the webmaster of NCR Spain Professional Services. It was here that I laid my hands on UNIX for the first time, concretely with NCR MP-RAS SVR4. It was also my first “real” programming gig using Perl.

Afterwards I joined infoCINE.com as webmaster from 1997 to the end of 1998. It’s a shame, but this website didn’t survive the new millennium. My main contributions, besides establishing standard compliant HTML as a rule, were:

  • Change our ISP from Windows NT/IIS to IRIX/Apache.
  • Development of an internal ad management platform.
  • LAN administration and secutization
  • Setup of a Linux Based development enviroment integrated with MacOS 8 and Windows NT systems.

End of 1998. Next stop: Tafari Informática. I developed diverse projects in ASP over IIS. On the end of 1999 I became Systems Manager and started to change the company IT infrastructure to Open Source systems (Linux) and servers.

I worked in WebOnline Studios for a year, from mid 2000 until March 2001. My main contribution was segmenting the LAN and the setup of a transparent firewall.

Infinitto (2001)

From April 2001 to January 2002 I lived one of my shortest but most intense professional experiences. An old Tafari boss was headhunted by a new DTV business, Infinitto Networks, and he called me to join his team.

As STB UI Lead Developer my objectives comprehended:

  • Contribute to the definition of a development platform for rich content. The main options being OpenTV and MediaHighway.
  • Setup development pilots with the different technologies being evaluated.
  • Define the embedded web browser requirements
  • Dream new interactivity models. And perform them.

I was a member of the most incredible professional team I had ever seen and together we achieved:

  • The creation of an interactive TV portal with OpenTV Publisher that defied the state of the art.
  • Development of a RAD environment to create interactive interface prototypes, including the use of remote controls.
  • Design of a platform to integrate movile services (SMS, WAP) to enable a new interactivity channel for the user, allowing her to control her services while on the move.

This incredible experience arrived to an abrupt end due to the action of external market forces and the company went bankrupt.

I then decided to get a small sabatical in Cambridge, UK to improve my english until september 2002

The system administration years (2002-2009)

On september 2002 I joined the UNIX administration team at Prisacom. Soon I became the technical lead of the outsourced team (I drew the shortest straw). I kept this position until December 2003, when half of the team was made reduntant.

I worked in Data Adviser as a Systems Analist during the summer of 2004. I moved to Barcelona at the end of this year.

In 2005 I worked as a System Administrator on Cast Info. Afterwards I worked as an external Systems Engineer for Informática El Corte Inglés (IECISA) until March 2007, when I joined the company as a Systems Architect.

On january 2008 I was promoted to UNIX and Storage Technical Lead for the east zone of the Iberian Peninsula (Catalonia, Balearic Islands, Andorra), position that I held until May 2009.

Rōnin (2010 - onwards)

Since January 2010 I work as a freelance in all my experience areas: development, system administration, mobility, cloud computing, storage.

… the website

For years this website has been my test bed for different computer languages that I used to develop my own diary/blogging system: Perl, PHP, Bash, Ruby, Python…

On September 2010 I decided that I wanted to post content and not care about the technological platform, so I packed everything and started to use tumblr.
